The Dewitt C. Alfred, MD Psychiatric Symposium

Equity has always been a driving force in our medical education, clinical care, and scientific pursuits at , and the need for advancement of equity in the psychiatric workforce is clear. Our institution has a long track record of expertly supporting the training and development of trainees from under-represented minoritized racial groups through our medical student and psychiatric trainee experiences. Now we want to share the extraordinary mentorship, sponsorship, and representation found in our department with more psychiatrists in training.

The Dewitt Symposium, named for the founding chair of our department, Dr. Dewitt C. Alfred, Jr., is an annual event at Morehouse School of Medicine that has traditionally been an internal event, including only our residents and fellow trainees and faculty. In 2023, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences held the 1st expanded Dewitt C. Alfred, MD Psychiatric Symposium. It was a marvelous event where 12 trainees from other institutions joined Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for a three day program. This year, we plan to welcome residents and fellows from other institutions along the east coast of the United States for a scientific exchange and workshops regarding career progression and personal sustainability as a psychiatric physician. The program will be held in Atlanta, GA at the the evening of May 1st through the morning of May 3rd, and include a number of activities to promote professional development, career planning, and mentorship both from peers and faculty.
