Why Family Medicine as a Specialty?

The real question is why not Family Medicine? I chose Family Medicine after going on a medical mission trip to Lima, Peru in 2014. It was there I realized that I didn’t want to be limited to who I provided care to, especially if I wanted to do international work in the future. For this, FM was the perfect specialty for me because of the opportunity to provide multi-generational care to a diverse patient population. I also like the preventative medicine aspect of FM, and being able to educate my patients and prevent medical diseases and complications. Lastly, there are many avenues I can take in FM, allowing for variety not only in the workplace but skill sets.

    Why Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for Training?

I chose Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for 2 reasons! 1) The mission— I value Ï㽶ÊÓƵ’s emphasis of serving the  underserved. I believe it’s populations like these that’s often gets overlooked. I know Ï㽶ÊÓƵ will provide me with the tools necessary to address and therefore improve health disparities in my community. 2)The people—interview day/meet and greets/ second looks everyone was just really nice and relatable in some way. I laughed the most with the residents at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, and knew that they were colleagues that I would enjoy working with one day. I’m about a month into residency, and I can truly say I feel supported and I love it here!

    Hobbies/Interests:

I enjoy playing all sorts of board/card games. So I will most certainly be in attendance at ALL game nights! I love watching The Game Show Network, specifically Family Feud. If time allows I also like playing volleyball. I enjoy any opportunity to be creative and love arts & crafts. I also enjoy traveling, and exploring new cities especially through food. Lastly, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and 6-month old Chorkie.

Why Family Medicine as a Specialty?

I really enjoy outpatient medicine, I enjoy obstetrics care, mental health, service to underserved community, and improving health literacy and family medicine incorporates this and provides me with the ability to see patient of all ages/genders. Family medicine is a really broad field, so I will have the opportunity to do a variety of things post residency.

    Why Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for Training?

I really liked my experience with the Family Medicine Department as a student and as a native at Atlanta, it was a great opportunity to train in familiar settings and be present in the communities I grew up in.

    Why Family Medicine?

I love the breadth of family medicine, and I love having the flexibility to see both kids and adults in clinic. I also embrace the daily challenge that comes with advocating for patients who might otherwise be left to navigate our country's complicated health care system on their own.

    Why Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for Training?

I knew I wanted to be back home for residency training serving in the community where I grew up, and Morehouse and I shared that same social mission of serving the underserved and mitigating health disparities in Black and other marginalized communities.

Why Family Medicine as a Specialty?

Family Medicine is one of med schools best kept secrets. The variety and autonomy that I have within family medicine is part of what attracted me to the specialty. Not only do I get to be involved in women's health, pediatrics, etc. But I can continue to reshape my career if I desire to. I can be a hospitalist, work in outpatient, run an urgent care, a rehab facility, and so much more. As a Primary Care Physician, I can tackle the disparities that aligned me with medicine in the first place. Family Medicine is the glue that holds it all together and I am empowered by the diversity in my field.

    Why Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for Training?

I chose Morehouse School of Medicine because I truly believed the training I would receive here would be unmatched. Prior to even starting medical school, I knew I was called to serve underserved communities. While searching for a residency program, I realized that Ï㽶ÊÓƵ was putting into action what they were stating on paper. I wanted to be part of that. I felt that Ï㽶ÊÓƵ would strengthen and support my desire to serve the communities I am called to, and I have not been disappointed.

    Hobbies/Interests:

I love a good nappy time. Parks/nature are my happy place. It allows me to destress and tune out the noise. Food is always a win; I enjoy trying new restaurants or recipes. And lastly traveling, learning, music and movies.

Why Family Medicine as a Specialty?

I chose family medicine because of how much it has to offer. I couldn't choose between caring for children or adults, so I chose both. Along those same lines, there is not one body system that I value over the other; all systems are working together for the whole and I value them all equally. Family Medicine is the only specialty that allows you to work with any population you desire, while also retaining every piece of knowledge that you've accumulated over the years to make the best decisions for your patients.

    Why Ï㽶ÊÓƵ for Training?

What I valued most when choosing a residency program was how that place made me feel. The love and support that runs through this program was very evident. Ï㽶ÊÓƵ is also very active in the community and does not only talk the talk, but truly walks the walk. I wanted to be apart of an organization that is really making an impact in underserved communities and Morehouse is doing just that.

    Hobbies/Interests:

I love anything outdoors (ie. river tubing, walks, sitting on the patio). Nature brings me so much peace.  I love art  (museums, art shows, painting classes, etc). I also love gardening and spending time with my loved ones. Anything is fun with the right company. Interests include: preventative, lifestyle, and integrative medicines.
